Winter Hiking on the Rails of Reindeers

When the presentiment of the sun gives the nature its blue - purple - orange - colours we make our first moves into snow covered nature of Lapland. It is the best time for the snowshoe walks in the silent woodland and hilly grounds of the fell area in the Finnish West Lapland.

Polar night, in Finnish Kaamos, starts here at this latitude on the 4th of December and continues till 10th of January. During this time the sun is not to be seen above the horizon. However, it is not as dire as it may sound - during the Polar Nights the landscape is covered in snow, beautifully reflecting the light of the stars above. The time of the Polar Nights is the perfect time to watch the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

During the tour the guide will tell about the life of the reindeer and the reindeer herding, northern lights, and other things that are specially Lappish or belongs into the Lappish people's lives. We start our daily tours from Rauhala Village in Kittilä. The day tours are c. 10-16 km, c. 6-7 hours. On activity days breakfast, lunch soup/package, dinner, sauna.

Rauhala is located ca. 30 km from Levi Ski Resort and ca. 40 km from Ylläs Ski Resort (Äkäslompolo Village).

The program is also suitable for families with children. This tour is organised also for groups on request.

Day Programme

Sunday - Arrival day. Dinner and accommodation. Accommodation in a holiday cabin or in the rooms for 2 persons.
Monday - After the breakfast the guide will tell about the area and the program of coming week. Today we will head our winter hiking to a reindeer fence in the vicinity. On the fence will have a lunch break and the guide will tell about reindeer husbandry in Lapland.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday -Each day we will make a relaxed guided snowshoe hike to a tunturi (Lappish Hill) varying our daily destination. We will hike in forests and open hills. Lunch break on open campfire or in a kota (Lappish teepee).
Friday - Today we will have a bus ride to Pallastunturi Hill Chain, where we will first visit the Information Centre of the National Park. At the Information centre of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park we will learn more about the history and the nature of this area, - it’s flora and fauna - from an exhibition and a slide show. After the exhibition we will have a brisk hike to picturesque Pallastunturi Hills. Bus transportation back to Rauhala. Farewell dinner at Rauhala.
Saturday - Breakfast in Rauhala, departure.
